Puerto Banus

The gardens at les Jardines del Puerto- palm trees, banana trees, bird-of-paradise and orange trees.

Courtyards and fountains

An integral element of the Moorish architecture is the courtyard, usually with arches and a fountain. These views are from the palace in Ronda, the Generalife and the Alhambra in Granada.

The Mesquita in Cordoba. This has to be one of the most amazing buildings in the world- an Arab mosque, the biggest outside of Mecca, now transformed into a cathedral. There are almost 600 red and white striped arches which contrast in their beautiful simplicity and symmetry with the ornate decoration of the cathedral nave in the centre of the great square edifice.

Orange trees

Orange trees at the Alahambra, Granada.

Everywhere in Andalucia there were orange trees and the most atonishing thing is that they are laden with fruit and wonderfully perfumed orange blossom at the same time!

Fast ferry from Tarifa to Tangiers

Tangiers on the coast of Morocco is only a short fast ferry trip across the Straits of Gibraltar. Here we are leaving Tarifa in Spain, heading for the Kasbah in Tangiers. Clocks back 2 hours - theoretically you arrive one and a half hours BEFORE you left!

The Kasbah at Tangiers

The Kasbah closed for cleaning on Tuesdays. But the main thing is that we found it all on our own in the winding maze of alleyways of the old medina! Another time maybe...

Scenes in the souk at Tangiers.

The souk in Tangiers is probably very much the same as it was hundreds of years ago...I can't believe I had chicken for lunch after seeing these forlorn creatures, each attached to the leg of another...

It is the last week of April and the wisteria is in full bloom everywhere.

Old stone walls and wisteria

Ronda

Ronda is an extraordinary little town of palaces, Moorish courtyards and gardens perched on high cliffs. An amazing bridge joins the old town and the new town with plunging views into the narrow valley.
